The Lanna Traditional Doctor's society is a group of traditional doctors who practice throughout Thailand. As initiated practitioners in a medical lineage, these doctors are holders and transmitters of a body of knowledge, made available only through experienced practitioners maintaining textual and oral traditions.

A lineage is essentially a method of protecting and continuing the transmission of knowledge. Learning and practicing the application of therapies usually requires both study and apprenticeship with a qualified teacher. The body of knowledge is passed from teacher to student through oral instruction, textual study and sharing of practice experience, requiring a close and committed relationship from both parties. When a teacher shares protected knowledge and guides a student through studies, they are sacrificing precious time and resources; essentially, they are taking responsibility for their student's knowledge and activities. Therefore, it is expected that students will commit to acting responsibly and with good conduct, with a dedication to learning, to their teacher and to the continuation of the lineage.
